To celebrate Biomedical Science Day, a children’s and public event highlights biomedical scientists’ contributions to the NHS.

University of Cumbria, Carlisle College, and North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Trust (NCIC) are partnering to show Carlisle College students and the public how biomedical scientists help doctors and other health professionals make clinical decisions every day.

On Thursday, June 8, Carlisle College will host Biomedical Science Day from 10-2pm.

Interactive exhibits, equipment trials, and contests will highlight biomedical scientists’ diverse work. Blood, biochemistry, microbiology, genetic, and tissue samples will be tested.

The event was organized by University of Cumbria, Carlisle College, and NCIC to promote the profession.

“Biomedical Science is one of the least well-known professions contributing to national health,” stated Mark Magas, Programme Leader for Biomedical Sciences at the University of Cumbria.

Everyone associates medical care with physicians and nurses. But biomedical experts assist the entire NHS by diagnosing illnesses like sepsis, meningitis, and cancer and ensuring patients get the proper blood safely.

Tutors Vicky White and Jill Brown will answer questions at Carlisle College’s event.

They said: “We are thrilled to welcome the University of Cumbria and NCIC to the College to host this event. “Biomedical Science is a fascinating subject, and we are looking forward to welcoming those interested into the College to discuss the opportunities available and to advise those wishing to take those first steps into the sector.”

“I am a proud HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist working at NCIC and a Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Cumbria,” said Melissa Blaylock, who works part-time as a lecturer. My clinical laboratory job is varied, engaging, and rewarding since I assist patient care. Cumbria science is interesting, with several career paths!

Carlisle College’s Access to HE Biomedical Science prepares students towards undergraduate degrees.

Cumbria University provides two undergraduate BSc Biomedical Sciences programs, one with a foundation year. These selections make biomedical science careers in the county apparent.

Cumbria University excels at training regional healthcare workers. Imperial College London and University of Cumbria will collaborate to build a graduate medical school in Carlisle in 2025. The new school hopes to keep physicians in Cumbria.

The Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) organizes Biomedical Science Day on June 8.

The IBMS reported that biomedical scientists thought their labor was undervalued and underappreciated. Biomedical Science Day promotes biomedical science on IBMS founder Albert Norman’s birthday.
